Nicki Minaj has opened up about her wardrobe malfunction nightmare at the MTV Video Music Awards last month (Aug14), insisting the drama was not a carefully-planned stunt.
The 31-year-old rapper walked onto the stage for her performance of Bang Bang with Ariana Grande and Jessie J clutching an unzipped little black dress around her.
Gossips suggested she appeared undressed in an effort to steal headlines from her collaborators, but Minaj later insisted the zipper had broken, and now she has spoken out about the drama, admitting she didn’t have enough time for a costume change following her Anaconda performance.
Appearing on Wednesday’s The Ellen DeGeneres Show in America, the shapely hip-hop star said, “I had… about 40 to 50 seconds to change from the Anaconda outfit into the Bang Bang outfit. Originally, I was just going to have a skirt that just wrapped around the green but then I realized that Jessie and Ariana were wearing black and white and I didn’t want to ruin the shot with me wearing a green bra, and them wearing black and white.
“I was like, ‘I have to put on a black dress really quickly’, and sure enough, we didn’t have a real quick-change right there. So it was literally my whole team just standing there holding curtains around me and it was pitch black. I couldn’t see anything and right before it was time for me to walk out they went to zip it (dress) up… And right there I thought I died (when the zipper broke).
“I didn’t have any underwear on. No underwear. No bra, because I had just taken off the Anaconda outfit. So I was butt a** naked.”
